Glossary of Terms

#'s:

3RS- Three Rivers Stadium- The former stomping grounds of the Pirates and Steelers. Some of the greatest teams in MLB and NFL history played their home games there. 3RS was the predecessor to the JotNS, which the Nuthouse/Fall Guy regime swindled out of the Tax Payers by promising a better on field product if given a shiny new stadium to display it in. The Steelers and Pens also got new, tax payer funded venues, but have likely generated more revenue for the city and county in a single season than the Bucs in the last 10 years.

.500- the Pirates unicorn. The winning percentage not seen in nearly 20 years. That figure is likely to double.

A:

AAAA player or 4-A Player- refers to the majority of players on the Pirates roster. Not really MLB caliber, but slightly above AAA level.

Anti's- refers to the lunatic fringe Pirates fans who, for some unknown reason, believe the franchise is underachieving.I stole this from SmizBlog

AVS- Andy Van Slyke, Pirates great CF during Glory Years. Suffered career altering injury, referred to by BLB as Great White Hope because he actually tried on every play and people appreciated his effort. AVS once punched BLB in the nose and refused a Canadian flag sticker on this batting helmet because they are "a bunch of socialist pacifists."

B:

Bob Smizik- Former PG writer and current PG blogger who is openly critical of everything, ever. He has oft drawn the ire of the Lying Liar as well as Pens fans and most esepcially Mark Madden (whom he actually got fired at one point). He should, however, be viewed as history's #1 Pirates fan as he is the only person who was alive for all 5 World Series wins. He also wants exactly what we here at the Mutiny want: a competitive and potentially prosperous baseball team.

Brontosaurus- refers to Brewers portly 1B Prince Fielder. He is the world's largest vegetarian, owns the Pirates, and always rubs it in. He is also very fat.

Bucs- a nickname for the Pirates. Short for Buccaneers, rhymes with sucks. Also synonymous with the name of the Tampa Bay NFL team that once went 2 games shy of losing EVERY GAME for 2 consecutive seasons.

BLB- Barry Lamarr Bonds- refers to the candy arm who couldn't throw out Sid Effing Bream on the Day the Franchise Died. Bonds naturally left the team soon thereafter and in his late 30's ballooned from 185 lbs to 250 lbs and improved his stats. He clearly did not do steroids. He is also seen by many Pittsburghers as an albatross around the Pirates' neck as his departure was the beginning of the end.

C:

Cutch- refers to Andrew McCutchen, the Luke Skywalker/Obi-Wan of the Pirates franchise. i.e. believed to be Our Only Hope.

Cleveland- the city that every Pittsburgh sports fan is glad that we are not.......

D:

the Day the Franchise Died (DFD)- refers to October 14, 1992. If you do not know what that date refers to, then honestly why are you even here?

Dynasty- what the Lying Liar envisions for the Pirates in the not too distant future.

DK- Dejan Kovacevic. The very talented PG reporter who had the unreal job of being the Bucs beat writer for a very long time. He is very realistic and honest.

E:

Evil Empire- refers to the New York Yankees. But honestly, at least they want to win.

F:

FO- refers to the Pirates Front Office. Known on SmizBlog as the BMTIB ( Best Management Team in Baseball).

Five-Year Plan: something the FO starts every other year.

False Hope- Something the FO tries to feed to fans every single year.

Fall Guy- Kevin McClatchy. Inept former managing partner, ran team into ground, but ultimaely the fall guy for Nuthouse in order to enact another couple Five-Year Plans.

G:

GI Jones- refers to Garrett Jones, Pirates super-platoon utility player.

Glory Years- for those born after 1979, the years from 1990-1992.

Good for the Pirates- a player who has serviceable numbers, probably wouldn't be in the majors for any other team, and is thus compared to the Pirates's Pujols.

The Great One- Roberto Clemente, one of the greatest Pirates ever. One of the early 5 Tool players and a stand-up guy. His #21 is retired by the Pirates and should be retired by the entire MLB.

The Guy Who Cried- refers to RP Daniel McCutchen. Look it up, Unreal.

H:

He Who Shall Not Be Named- Francisco effing Cabrera. As funcitionally illiterate ESPN NBA analyst Jalen Rose would say " Goggle It".

HR- Home Run. Though few and far between, this is the Pirates main source of offense as manufacturing a run is virtually impossible for this team unless they Manufacture A Run the Pirates way. (see below)

I:

J:

J-Bay- refers to Jason Bay, former LF who actually liked playing here and was a good player. Obviously, he is no longer here.

Jake Taylor- Clint Hurdle, because I think he looks like Jake Taylor.

Jewel of the North Shore (JotNS)- refers to PNC Park. The Tax Payer funded ballpark that the Pirates play in rent free while operating their pyramid scheme.

K:

Kdro- refers to Pirates 3B Pedro Alvarez. 41 K's in 34 Games played------ enough said.

KY HR- the Kevin Young Home Run. Stolen from DK, a stat padding home run once a game is already decided and normally NOT in the Bucs favor.

Kool-Aid- what Anti's call the BS that the FO feeds the Pro'sm who view it as gospel.

L:

Lying Liar- refers to Frank Coonelly, President of the Pirates. He is notorious for gross over evaluation of current talent and management personnel and his outlandish predictions of a "Dynasty". Also adept at getting foot stuck directly in mouth.

"L"- refers to a loss, or an outcome in which the Pirates score less runs than their opponent. This is not the desirable result but is far more common than it's opposite a "W".

Lyle Overpaid- refers to Lyle Overbay. Also self explanatory.

M:

Manufacturing a run- Common amongst most MLB teams, this can occur in a variety of ways. E.g. Drawing a walk, stealing second base, scoring on a single or hitting consecutive extra base hits.

Manufacturing a run the Pirates Way- Similar to above but normally costs the team 2 outs and leaves nobody else on base. There are 3 common scenarios:

1.) When the Bucs have given up 3-5 runs the previous inning, the leadoff batter reaches base, is bunted to 2nd (yielding one out), the leadoff man then either steals 3rd or gets there via wild pitch. He is then brought in to score via sac fly or ground out because the infield is conceding the run. 2 outs, 1 run and nobody on base.

2.) The leadoff batters gets an extra base hit, he advances to third on a ground out, scores on a sac fly, and there is still 2 outs and nobody on base and we are still down 4-1.

3.) The leadoff batter gets a triple, the following batter walks, and the next batter hits into a 6-4-3 double play. The run scores, we have 2 outs, and nobody on base.

MH- refers to Mondesis House, which along with thePensBlog and Pittsburgh Sports and Mini Ponies forms the Holy Triumvirate of PGH sports blogs IMHO. MH is on hiatus due to family issues but serves as my inspiration to start Mutiny on the Allegheny.

The Mutiny- refers to this blog, it's readers, and commenters. A group of passionate Piratess fans who oppose the current ownership group and want nothing more than to see winning baseball here in the 'Burgh.

Mr. Sunshine- Pirates announcer Greg Brown, who is perpetually upbeat in the booth no matter the situation and predicted 2011 would be the year the losing streak ends. He is clearly delusional and could be classified as a Kool-Aid drinking Pro.

N:

Nuthouse- refers to Bob Nutting, the money grubbing Owner of the Pirates. Many people think he is clueless or inept but as we have learned from the Financial Statements, he is a freaking evil genius.

Nutters- synonymous with Pro's/

O:

Opie- refers to Neal Huntington, GM of the Pirates. Neal is know for his incomparable ability to evaluate talent based upon years of contractual control and other various methods that translate to very little production. He is referred to as Bad Deal Neal on SmizBlog (see below) and is adept at unsuccessfully attempting to remove Coonelly's foot from his mouth.

P:

Pens- refers to the Pittsburgh Penguins NHL team. They are the thorn in the Pirates and Bob Smizik's side as they win a lot. The Pirates hate the Pens very existence, have refused to sell to their ownership group, and bashed the Penguins for losing in the second round of the playoffs last year only ONE YEAR AFTER WINNING THE STANLEY CUP. The Pens have made the playoffs 16 of the lat 20 seasons, yet Pro's like to point to the 4 years where they didn't as evidence that they are not very good.

Plant- refers to somebody suspected of being a FO employee who is just blowing smoke up people's rear-ends in various blogs.

Pride of Pine Richland- Neil Walker. A very good MLB caliber 2B who to Pirates fans is NL MVP candidate.

Pro's- refers to the group of fans that blindly drink anything served to them by the FO. This is a term made popular on SmizBlog and I am not creative enough to find a new one. See the post @10:44 from Sharky: Also:http://communityvoices.sites.post-gazette.com/index.php/sports/bob-smiziks-blog/28740-pirates-starters-maybe-not-so-good

PSAMP- Pittsburgh Sports and Mini Ponies is a humorous PGH sports blog that I find to be funny.

Q:

R:

Raise the Jolly Roger- a phrase uttered by Mr. Sunshine after every Pirates win.

The Rock- John Wehner- Pittsburgh native, former Pirate utility man, and current road broadcaster. Looks and sounds like Bill Cowher. Wehner miraculously managed to play roughly 24 seasons in the majors, playing every position twice, somehow winning a World Series, and also hitting the final HR at 3RS. Of course, that final HR at 3RS came in a Pirates loss. It is common place during a Bucs broadcast for Walkie or Mr Sunshine to comment on The Rock's eating habits and his love of the all you can eat seats. Not to be confused with Steve Blass's love of the All You Can Drink seats, which he has for every home game. Once again, who can blame him.

S:

Scrap Heap- known to the FO as the Free Agent Market.

Sid Effing Bream- this one is also self explanatory.

SmizBlog: refers to the sports blog on the PG website run by local legend Bob Smizik. Mr. Smizik is not shy with opinions and his blog is a major source of derision about Bucs fans. Some believe he is vehemently opposed to all the Nutting FO does while others think he is bat$h!t crazy.

Steve Blass- one of the better pitchers in Pirates history, World Series hero, and current announcer. If he isn't drunk in the booth 90% of the time, then he's probably drunk in the booth 100% of the time. Who can blame him? He is our Harry Doyle and somebody any Pirates fan, Anti or Pro, would love to hang out with. Blass is an excellent golfer, this is the truth, and got 2 hole in ones in the same round. His career stats are pretty solid :http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/blassst01.shtml and he is an all around good guy.

Steve Blass Syndrome- An unfortunate occurrence where a once dominant pitcher loses his stuff. This has not affected any recent Pirates pitchers as none of them were ever even close to dominant at any point in their career.

T:

TPB- The Pens Blog- a humorous Pens Blog who at times has had to defend the Pens against attacks by certain groups of Pirates fans.

Teke- Kent Tekulve- Former Pirates Closer, Former Human Banana, World Series Champ, and post-game analyst. Known for his turtlenecks and Mr. Sunshine like optimism, Teke always thinks the Bucs are in the process of turning the proverbial corner.

U:

V:

W:

"W"- refers to a win, or a game in which the Pirates score more runs than their opponents. These are very infrequent between June 1 and October 5.

Walkie- Refers to former pitcher and current announcer Bob Walk. He is normally pretty blunt and also tends to lose interest in the games by the 3rd inning He prefers to talk about things such as the type of fish people are catching on the River Walk or anything unrelated to the action on the field.

World's Largest Vegetarian- Prince Fielder- see Brontosaurus.

X:

Y:

Years of Control- depending on the number of years applicable to this phrase, determines whether the Pirates will sign or pass on a washed up former MLB 5th starter on a terrible team or similarly skilled position player.

Z:
