The Time is Now

The Pirates return to action tomorrow night in Houston one game out of first place in the NL Central. The Brewers, tied for 1st, were feeling the hot breath of the Cards and Bucs on their necks and went out and acquired Francisco Rodriguez to bolster their bullpen. Now, Nuthouse is making his media rounds and based on his words, reading a little bit in between the lines, and the rumblings from blogs and local media outlets, the Bucs are going to do much by July 31.

I don't know if Nuthouse is preparing for an epic collapse, doesn't want to spend the cash, or doesn't have the balls/ability to fleece another team the way we have been fleeced in the past, but I don't like the vibe I'm getting. So far, the main excuse is indeed viable: "We don't want to mortgage the future". Fine, I get that. But you don't have to give up much to get something in return. The return for Jason Bay wasn't much. The return for Aramis Ramirez was less. Jose Bautista didn't fetch much. Neither did Adam LaRoche. Not that LaRoche or Bautista were world beaters then, LaRoche still isn't, but it would be similar to getting a guy like Willingham or Francouer for next to nothing.

My overall point is that I think the Bucs are preparing us for them being sellers yet again. Maholm and Hanrahan are currently being discussed because they are at peak value. Seriously? More major league talent sold off to build the minors and save money to sign guys in the future? How many more of these 5 year plans are we going to put up with?

Obviously, nothing is done yet. But if the Bucs are still in striking distance and there is nothing done to improve the team's odds, we have all been duped again.

1997 was 14 years ago.......................................................... That's how long it's been since we've been this close.

  1. The Pirates have given the indication that they are willing to be buyer not sellers. Saying otherwise is just trying to be negative. They are not willing to mortgage the future though, and they shouldn't. The team is decent this year and will be better next year just as long as they don't start selling off the future.

  2. This front office's actions so far have done nothing to prove that they will take on significant payroll at the deadline so you have every reason to be skeptical. I am very skeptical.

They have been throwing out excuses to do nothing already so I can see that happening. I would rather they did nothing than trade Maholm and Hanrahan for the so called "problem prospects" like a Milledge or Moss or someone like that.

Nuthouse and Opie, either trade to make a run or stand pat, please no more salary dumps for "organizational depth".

  3. Dale,
No one wants that type of deal. There is no reason to think that they will do that kind of deal. The team is in a completely different position now than before.

  5. "But if the Bucs are still in striking distance and there is nothing done to improve the team's odds, we have all been duped again."

Hate to disagree with this statement above, but hardly anyone will be duped at all.

"Pros" are never duped, because they support all moves by the team. Anyone who dares question them, is negative.

"Antis" wont be duped, because we have seen this act before from this FO.

The only people that will be duped, are the fans who rejoined the team this year, and dont know/care about the FO shenanigans. Those people WANT to believe what the team says. I feel bad for that segment of fans......

  6. Roger,
I will be duped if the team doesn't attempt to do something. Don't say you have seen this before, because yo haven't. The team hasn't been in this position before.

  7. Meathead actually made a pretty salient point over on Smizblog about this whole thing.

"What's interesting is most teams are looking to add a guy who will become the fifth or sixth best player on the team while it seems the Pirates almost need to add a player who will be the best player or second best player on the team."

That's what is troubling about this whole situation; while I've been vocal that the Pirates needing to add a bat, I really don't know that they'll find a guy that's a TRUE difference-maker. The chief reason? Beyond Beltran, how many of those guys are available?

By extension, if there are few of them out there, what will it cost to get them.

Everyone has said since the beginning of the season - guys like Stark, Olney, etc. - that this is a seller's market. Therefore, if the Pirates end up with someone no better than Mark Reynolds, I won't necessarily feel duped or upset. The only way I'll be upset is if the Pirates trade Hanrahan or Maholm.

I'd rather stand pat than get rid of one of those two.

  8. Sean,

I agree very much with all of those points.

I do however believe that adding somebody who can hit 10+ HR in the second half, if the price is not too high, would GREATLY help. I'm not saying we need to give up Marte or someone of his ilk.

And yes, moving Maholm and/or Hanrahan at this point would be a infuriating. He is the only lefty starter we have that is major league ready and his option for next season is a fair price for someone with his credentials.

  9. Burress--

And what a sad world we live in when $9.75M is fair market value for Paul Maholm.

For comparison, compare Paul Maholm's career numbers against the Pirates' initial free agent target last year, Jorge de la Rosa. All numbers include this year.

    Maholm: 53-68, 4.31 ERA, 1103.0 IP, 1.416 WHIP, 10.7 WAR

    de la Rosa: 54-49, 4.90 ERA, 769.2 IP, 1.497 WHIP, 4.7 WAR

I know many like to rip apart the WAR stat, but I think it can a useful stat in determining the differences between players.

If WAR is to be believed, Paul Maholm is twice the pitcher Jorge de la Rosa is. And de la Rosa is MAYBE above average, though he was doing well before getting hurt this year. But then again, de la Rosa got a $10M/year contract from the Rockies.

At $9.75M, Maholm is a steal.

  10. Baseball economics is indeed vomit inducing.

I don't put a whole lot into stats outside of AVG, OBP, OPS, HR, RBI, SB, ERA, W's & L's, and K to BB.

One stat I despise is pythagorean W/L. You either win or you lose, that one is the most pointless IMHO.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Yep. Well said Roger. We've seen this many times before.
This whole idea of the situation being different is Bullshit.

    ReplyDelete
  12. BFD,
You're right it is exactly the same situation as alway. Every year the Pirates are in legit contention. How silly of me to think it were different.

  13. Speaking of Dog (and his many ID's on Smizik's blog.....
I posted this late night PDT time on the Smiz blog, but I'm sure he'll delete by morning:
If this were my blog (and it's not).....I wouldn't let this happen.
After researching.....Below is an example (yesterday) of Dog carrying on a conversation with himself on this very blog....Via two of his many ID's.
Some of the other posts were removed by myself to save space and make the self-indulging conversation more apparent.

    Buccs72,
That ranking was done prior to the season. You probably thought before the season that Presley d"arnaud, and Harrison were worse than they really are too. There is much more talent in the system than you are giving credit for. You may think that is an opinion, but it is fact. You questioned my judgment in the past and were wrong and you are again.

Furcal has played in only 24 games this year.
He is batting .185 with 1 double and 1 home run.
He has 5 walks and 14 strie outs.
Why does anyone want him on the Pirates? This is 2011 not 2005.

    Buccs72,
I'm sorry I didn't know that your opinion counted as fact. My bad. Next time I have a question I will just ask you since you know everything. Clearly I don't have your vast knowledge of the minors. My deepest apologies.

    Phil,
My comment to you is that do you believe that the Pirates players like Presley are the only surprises in the major leagues? Yeah, maybe the Pirates minors are a little better than people expected, but so are others.
The minor leagues are a lot better than what they were, but you are way over the top in your assertion of how great it is.
Nobody in this blog knows how all of the other minor league teams are progressing throughout mlb. I am sure that other people around the country are saying the exact same thing that you are about their systems and surprising players.
Although the system is better, it has a long way to go.

    jason,
i'm not over the top at all. don't think the minor league system is in great shape. it is in much better shape than it was. that isn't saying it is great. to say that the system isn't better than it was like buccs did is just undeniably wrong.

    written by jasonpkerr, July 14, 2011 - 02:54 PM
The Pirates have a very good minor league system now
They do not have a very good minor league system Phil. That was your comment. Their system is better yes, but not even close to being very good.

    Jason,
I think if the team signs Bell and Cole you will see it ranked in the top ten. That is despite guys losing their prospect ranking (Chase, Josh, Alex etc)
    Buccs72 or anyone else,
Answer me this and if you can do so intelligently I will admit my assertion that the team has greatly improved the system is wrong.
If the team has not improved the system in both quality and depth how has the team been able to use 44 players and still have the best record it has had in way too many years?
    -3
    written by philmickelson, July 14, 2011 - 05:36 PM
Keith Law has 2 Pirates currently ranked among his top 50 prospects. Again if the Pirates sign Bell and Cole, which is no guarantee with their agent and the Pirates cheapness, there will be at least one more guy in the top 50. Allie, Marte, could be in the top 100. Other top 200 guys could very well include Cain, Grossman, Mercer, Cunningham, Sanchez, Bell just to name a few.
A name to keep an eye on is Mel Rojas Jr. He hasn't done much, but does he ever ave some tools. Wow!

  14. You know why he does that, don't you DAQ? When he isn't getting attention on that blog he resorts to having those conversations with himself. It is pretty pathetic.

He actually thought he insulted me by attacking my baseball knowledge. Baseball is third on my list behind hockey and football. Unlike him, I actually have a life. I can't spend my whole day posting on blogs using many different profiles and looking up sabermetric stats and minor league stats. And really, I don't care to.

Let's all ignore him on this blog, too. It will drive him nuts!!

    Roger,
You are so inconsequential it's hysterical.
It was proven I jhave one ID. Please get over it
I didn't post the insult above. The people who aren't smart enough to recognize the different writing styles are you. The styles are different seeing that they aren't me. You 3 have incorrectly called me at least a dozen people. I have been Dog, Snake, KGB, Beninpa, and philmickelson. All of the other ones aren't me. Smizik told you that as a FACT. I just like talking Pirate baseball. I'm not looking to fight.

I tried to get you and the other guys to be willing to debate in a more user friendly forum. I guess you aren't mature enough. I will be ecstatic if you ignore my posts. I would also be ecstatic if the other Smizik cronies ignore me as well. None of you know enough to carry on intelligent discourse. You think you know me, but you don't you just made my day. 31. As has been pointed out elsewhere and here, I don't ruin any blogs. The people attacking me are the ruination of blogs. These idiots have been called out on other blogs for the same thing. Sharky got himself kicked out of a blog after one post. BFD has been banned from others as well. I got banned from one blog.
The history lesson here is simple. There were some antis posting completely wrong opinions. Yes an opinion can be wrong. I pointed out the error of their ways in completely unconfrontational ways. They hated that I proved them wrong and became little whiny babies. They hated that I was and am still smarter than they are. The Smizik blog has turned around now that there are actually some other intelligent posters on there besides me, both pro and anti alike. Now that they get ripped to shreds constantly, they post less and less.

You are wrong. When I've been banned I've posted te same day under a new name. I will post under a new name for 8-10 weeks before getting called out. It isn't me that ruins blogs it's the idiots like BFD Daq Roger and of course the crazy psycho stalker Sharky. I go the ten weeks and evryone gets along with me. Then the idiot brigade starts calling out 5 or 6 people as being me and they are wrong. Eventually they figure out who I am. They then proceed to ruin it not me. That is only one blog. I post on others and have never been banned or created one stir. Whereas these jack asses have caused problems elsewhere. The problem isn't me. It's the idiot brigade.
I do realize that I'm hated on the Smizik blog. I also recognize that many of the same people who hate me compliment me before recognizing who I am.

  36. From what I understand, you had a meltdown on Smizblog last night. Too bad Bob deleted it all. I would have enjoyed it thouroughly. Also, too bad you'll just come back using another profile so you can ruin the blog again. You are truly insane!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Sharky,
You are so dumb it'smhysterical. What you are saying is completely wrong. I was caught doing no such thing. That 100% never happened. Jason and I posted at the exact same time thus removing any possibilty of being the same poster. Bob actually verified that I wasn't Jason. I had no meltdown of any kind. I never insulted anyone or used any type of ad language. I asked Bob to ban me, because when that happens that would prove that I only have the one ID. I would have my sign in eliminated on any computer I use. You were never one to let facts get in the way. I can't wait until I can come to Pitt and these other guys show up as well. Then you will be exposed as the idiot that you are.
Let's see no meltdown. No multiple ID's just one idiot named Sharky who never tires of being wrong. Sorry but the Dog wins again. Before you think I'm wrong go ask exactly how I had a meltdown. Of course your other idiot friends have reading comprehension issues. The other reason I can't wait to come to Pitt is too see what kind of a loser you are in real life. I will pay for your ticket since you are obviously too stupid to have a job.

    ReplyDelete
  38. You are never short of lies, are you?

I emailed Yotzee, who filled in the gaps that Bob Smizik deleted. He gave me the whole story which is nothing like you wrote above. You were caught being multiple posters, THAT IS A FACT.

No amount of lying by you can change that. You still continue to deny in the face of overwhelming facts. Are you under psychiatric help? If not, maybe you should go get some help.

You are the one who can't have a job with the amount of time you spend posting conversations with yourself (such as above). I personally never want to meet you because I have a feeling you have a multiple personality disorder and who knows with one of your crazy personalities I would meet.

  41. Here's a qustion for you. If I come to a game and prove that I'm just me will you admit you were wrong. I love how you think I'm lying with zero evidence that I am. Yotzee thinks I'm Jason, but that doesn't make it so, but whatever. I assure you I am a perfectly normal 45 year old. I have a job a wife, and a 5 year old step daughter. After the miscarriage we got pregnant again and are now expecting in January.
I have to ask my wife because I live in Rhode Island. I was suppose to go to the Red Sox series but I backed out because that was when we were expecting before the miscarriage. Then it became too expensive because I was going to have to fly instead of drive. So I didn't go. Now we are putting in a paver patio, so I don't know if I want to spend the money. If I can drive back and forth I'm going to try in Sept.
Lastly there isn't one once of evidence except some people's opinion that I have multiple ID's. Show me an IP address or anything that would show that. Yotzee is a good guy, but he is wrong here.

I've lived in either RI or CT my whole life other than when I went to Syracuse University for 5 1/2 years for both my bachelor's and Masters degrees. I use to play B'ball there with William Pennyfeather, pick up games of course. I'm not posting that to brag, but to throw out info so that I can prove once and for all I don't have multiple ID's. 44. Showing up doesnt prove your not Jason or anyone else, because you could simply show up, and if you happen to have a friend get him to be Jason. You may or may not have a brother-in-law you can bring.

Multiple IPs mean nothing. Im an IT professional Dog, there are many ways around that as I pointed out last night. Multiple devices and using web proxies will get around that issue. Were not as foolish as you think Doggie.

As I tried to explain to you yesterday, the simplist way to stop being accused is to BE A GROWN UP and use one ID.

I rwill emind you that you lied for a long time that Philmmickletits was not the Dog too.

Its a shame you would rather be a douchebag and try to control the blog to meet your needs than rely on what is the generally pretty knowledgeable baseball information you possess. That is what makes me want to believe you have some psychological issue and a control problem.

Sorry about the miscarriage, I've been there so I can sympathize. I hope things work out this time and I sincerely hope you do a better job teaching accountability and intergrity then you seemed to have learned. Its a better trait than deception and insults when wanting to be taken seriously.

    Yotzee

    ReplyDelete
  45. Just by you showing up at a game proves nothing. I know for a fact that all you have to have to make up an ID on Smizblog is an email address. You can make up as many email addresses as you want thru gmail and yahoo mail. That is what you do.
You don't even have to have more than one device. All you have to do is log out and then log in as your other ID.
It is so simple that even you figured out how to do it.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Sharky - by using multiple devices, you can deceive the IP staff if they do check the origination of the post. It also allows you to submit 2 posts at once and say "There we both posted at the same time!!"

    Yotzee

    ReplyDelete
  47. Yes, that can be done also. With the devices today, he could write up one thing on a Smartphone and another on his computer, hit send on both at the same time.

Also, being that I have a job (unlike him) I post during the day from my work computer and in the evening and days off from one of my two home computers so they will also show up as different IP addresses.

He thinks he is outsmarting everyone else, LMAO.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Yotz,
You are right about one thing. I lied about being Phil. Everytime I get banned I invent a new one. It is as easy as Sharky says. I make up some email address and voila a new ID. The thing is I invent a new one and go undetected for weeks. I get good dialog with multiple posters and I enjoy that. I can't talk Pirates at home. Everyone here likes the Red Sox or Yankees. It's awful.
Anyway, I always lie at first when I get caught after 2 months or so. Eventually I come clean and admit it. I even admitted to being two people at once. Why wouldn't I then just admit to being these other people if I were really them? It doesn't make sense. Why wouldn't I just stop posting as one of these people? Again it doesn't make sense. I wish there were a way to prove it, but I'm just Phil and no one else on that blog. Thank you about the miscarriage. That was difficult. Then to have people think I'm making up a story was just sick. I assure you I'm actually a very honest person. I have owned up to every fib.
    Sharky,
The funny thing is I'm so not computer savvy I couldn't outsmart you if I tried. I don't think I'm outsmarting you at all, quite the opposite in fact. I'm trying to come up with a way to prove my innocence. I'm completely stumped. What if we all showed up sometime and are licenses showed we were all from different places so that it would be highly unlikely that we were just friends that are posing as strangers? Would that work? Or is it just too much fun to push my buttons now that you finally figured out why. I'm the biggest ball-buster in the world so the other crap just makes me laugh, but I hate being called a liar.

  49. If you hate being called a liar Dog, THEN STOP BEING ONE. Your whole issue is like you said YOU LIED about multiple IDs, now you want to say your a ball buster because you hate being called a liar.

The reason you get banned is because YOU MADE YOURSELF NO LONGER WELCOME. Buy creating a new ID you are in fact a liar.

As you would say as you insult others....do you see how flawed your logic is??

People who obsessively try to prove their innocence generally are not innocent. Shakespere told us that 500 years ago when he said "Me thinks thou doth protest to much"

People who try to force their opinion in a place that it has been made clear they are no longer welcome are insane.

  51. You are entitled to your opinion. I'm entitled to mine. There are only a handful of people who don't welcome me there. Many ore compliment my knowledge and my posts. I have many positive exchanges with people. I don't try to force my opinion I just state my opinion. My ball busting ways have nothing to do with the lies. My point was since I'm a ball buster, the little petty insults fall off me. I didn't lie about the multiple ID's. I'm not jason or fish or thelastpiratefan or whole number of others that have been called me. I understand why people don't believe me, but I have come clean in every instance.

  53. Yotz,
You always got along just fine with me. That rant wasn't me it was Jason who is a different person than me. No I do not have dissociative Identity Disorder. You are incorrect about something else too. Since I'm unwelcome by a handful of bloggers the host banned me due to their childish taunts. I respect your opinion. I never insulted you like he did last night. If you noyice I never insult anyone on that blog. I don't know why this bothers me, but it does. That wasn't me. I'm familiar with Shakespeare, but he doth wrong this time. If you read through allof my posts as phil you will see a completely different tone. There has actually been a completely different tone since I was banned the first time. I guess I will have to rely on the IT dept to prove that I'm not lying.
