Pirates acquire Lee from Orioles

The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired first baseman Derrek Lee from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for prospect Aaron Baker.
Bringing in Lee could mean the end for Lyle Overbay, which I'm sure will bring some job to Pirates fans. However, the Bucs would still have to cover Overbay's $5 million salary.
Lee, who used to tear up Pirates' pitching as a Chicago Cub, isn't having a stellar year, although his .246 average with 12 homers and 41 RBIs is much better than Overbay's .227 average.
Overbay was one of the few left-handed batters in the lineup, but he just wasn't getting it done.
Lee is hitting .294 since June 17. The first baseman has been around, but hit 35 homers in 2009. He has been on some winning teams. I don't know if he'll be in the lineup against the Phillies in the finale of a three-game set, but the Bucs could use him.
They lost to Philadelphia, 7-4, Saturday night.
Trailing 3-0, Pedro Alvarez hit a two-run blast to make it 3-2, but the Phillies just kept tacking on runs. It was one step forward, two back for Pittsburgh.
Four runs isn't bad for the Pirates' offense, however they can't win slugfests. Especially against a team like Philadelphia.
They dropped to 3 1/2 games behind Milwaukee and 2 behind St. Louis in the NL Central Standings and are just three games above .500.
At least the Cubs are coming to town Monday. If they can't beat them, who can they beat?

  1. YIPPEE !!!!

We got an aging Lee for the stretch drive!!
    Last week, we got Grilli!!

But on a totally down note, we had to give up one of our sure-fire HOF minor-league prospects to get Lee.

WORLD SERIES OR BUST, BABY !!!!

  2. Lee will do nothing same as Overpaid. Both are loading up their IRA's at the expense of the generous and duped "Bucco Nation",the phony and contrived moniker for Pirates Fans used by KDKA-FM's The Fan, what a crock.Pearce,Kdro,Paul,Wood and Ciriaco are at best AAA players and are Cheapskate Nuttings answer to our offenses woes. The FO had chances to open the money bin and as usual failed Clint Hurdlenand the fans AGAIN. Lets face it the team is in the early stages of another crash and burn.

  3. Gee who didn't see this kind of sarcastic reaction coming?

Anybody acquired would have been welcomed with the same in this town. What difference would it make if they also would have got Ludwick, Fukudome, Willingham, whoever?

The sad truth is there's no one out there who puts this team over the top. Several needed to be made, and the Pirates just dont have the chips to acquire everything they need at one trading deadline. People get all emotional and fail to realize this, but hey, that's why they're just fans and not general managers.

    Roger says:

Dan, and why exactly dont we have the necessary chips? Because Huntington has done a horrible job. We hear how the "minors are stocked", but they are stocked with fish, not players.
We hear how players "dont want to come to Pittsburgh", but they dont want to come play for Huntington and the FO.......... there is a HUGE difference.

Enough of the rant. I have to watch the Pirates sleep thru the rest of the trading season.......

  5. To Dan:
The "General Manager" has consistently over valued his players and cannot get what the team needs because "The Miser" refuses to crack open his money bin. Also, doesn't the GM evaluate the coaches? When wasthe last time a hitter drove an outside pitch with that purpose not because of swinging late? Notice how clueless and uninterested several of the 'hitters" appear at the plate. Kdro needs to hustle, not jog, on a ground ball. A large portion of that attitude comes from coaching.Look like a professional act like a professional.
